SOC. PORT. MEDITAÇÃO/MINDFULNESS

Why this Mindfulness Course?
As the COVID-19 pandemic and its far-reaching implications continue to unfold globally and in our community, it's normal for people to experience a wide range of thoughts, feelings and reactions including:
  • Feeling stressed or overwhelmed;
  • Anxiety, worry, or fear;
  • Racing thoughts;
  • Sadness, tearfulness, loss of interest in usual enjoyable activities;
  • Physical symptoms, such as increased heart rate, stomach upset, fatigue, or other uncomfortable sensations, etc.
  • These experiences are all understandable in the face of this significant challenge. There has been loss of life, rapid changes to our way of life (e.g., study, work, social gatherings), and disrupted plans due to travel restrictions and social (physical) distancing measures in our efforts to slow the spread of transmission. People are naturally concerned for their own and their loved ones’ health and safety. There is still much uncertainty.

Learning to Respond Effectively to Stress: Finding Peace in a Fearful World
What is it?

Mindfulness-based online live course

A 4-session online mindfulness-based course to develop practical skills to better manage stress and anxiety.
This is a group-based, teacher led online training in basic mindfulness techniques aimed at helping participants better manage difficult emotions and thoughts and to help find peace and calm in the current storm
Each of the four 90m sessions will introduce simple techniques to develop emotional stability and resilience. The virtual group size will be small enough for individual mentoring in this learning process. Mindfulness extends the ability to stay calm and deepens it. As our awareness grows the mind naturally begins to calm and with a calm, steady mind we can see more clearly, experience more deeply, who we really are and how the world is around us. Seeing more clearly we begin to make better, saner, choices for ourselves and others.

Session one to four

Program

Session 1: ‘Coming to our Senses’ This session develops the skill of moving attention from thinking to sensing to facilitate better managing of circular negative thinking and associated emotions…and to find islands of peace in the storm of feelings so we can better respond to what is happening in our lives. ‘Everyday mindfulness’ is introduced for continuing the skills in everyday activities.

Session 2: ‘Gathering the Scattered Mind’ This session builds on the first by adding simple movement-based practices to build awareness of ourselves and better manage anxiety and stress. The session also introduces how we can use the breath to calm the mind and body. The everyday mindfulness focusses on learning from paying attention to pleasant events and moments in our lives

Session 3: ‘Understanding Stress and its Causes’ This session further builds the skill of paying attention and moving attention so as to enable more effective responses to difficulties in our lives. The practice of using the breath and the body as an anchor to build awareness and calm is further developed. The everyday mindfulness practice focuses on our communication with friends, family and work colleagues

Session 4: ‘Taking Mindfulness Skills into the Whole of our Lives’ This session consolidates the skills learnt throughout the previous weeks and then explores how we can take these skills out into our everyday lives – family and work -. We explore how to keep the practices going after the course has finished until the follow up session in 4 weeks time.
