Growing Up Mindful: Essential Practices to Help Children, Teens, and Families Find Balance, Calm, and Resilience

Introducing mindfulness into the lives of our children and teenagers is perhaps the greatest gift we can offer. Mindfulness builds emotional intelligence, boosts happiness, increases curiosity and engagement, reduces anxiety and depression, soothes the pain of trauma, and helps kids (and adults) focus, learn, and make better choices. If that weren’t enough, research now shows that mindfulness significantly enhances what psychologists call “flourishing”—the opposite of depression and avoidance. Growing Up Mindful helps parents, educators, and counselors learn how to embody and share the skills of mindfulness that will empower our children with resilience throughout their lives. With more than 75 accessible exercises and practices...

What to Expect

Join author, speaker and clinical psychologist Dr. Christopher Willard in a fun and interactive workshop for everyone interested in sharing mindfulness with children of all ages.

Abstract

Now, more than ever, our children need help focusing, getting calm and understanding their emotions. Teaching children mindfulness is now a leading and proven technique for parents, educators, psychologists and other professionals who work with children. Every child can learn and benefit from mindfulness, whether they struggle with stress, attention problems, ADHD, anxiety, depression, traumas, learning difficulties or other challenges.

  • This workshop will emphasize living mindfulness through play, games, eating, movement, song, sports and arts, not just sitting on a cushion. You will learn individual and group activities to use in educational, clinical, medical and other settings. We will discuss ways to encourage kids to practice independently and use mindfulness in their daily lives. We will also learn techniques we can use ourselves as caregivers, to reduce our own stress and be more effective in our work.

Key components and intentions of this highly
experiential weekend training include:

The importance of personal Mindfulness Practice
Adults are considered vital to the program. Most mindfulness programs for adults or children recommend that the facilitator (therapist or teacher) cultivate his or her own personal mindfulness practice. Simply teaching mindfulness activities from a book without having experienced them oneself is like offering violin lessons without ever having played a violin.
Mindfulness and Neuroscience for Healthy Brain Development
The simple science of how mindfulness keeps depression, PTSD, anxiety and aggression at bay.
Playful and practical exercises to explore the mind-body connection.
How to use the breath as a “remote control” for our minds, bodies and emotions.
Managing the Youth Mental Health Crisis

Why mindfulness, why now? in managing the mental health crisis
Accessible analogies to explain what mindfulness is and isn’t How to help kids and families slow down, sit still and single-task
Dealing with doubt: whether it’s your own, your colleagues, or the kids’ doubt.
Anxiety, ADHD and Impulse Control: Body Based Mindful Awareness
how to befriend the body as a source of wisdom and healing. You'll discover how to:
Help kids integrate their mind and body to maximize health, mental health, and learning
Make mindful movement and walking fun, funny, and engaging!
Mindful eating — Real world ideas and insights beyond the raisins for anxiety, depression, ADHD, impulse control and more
Make Mindfulness Fun! Arts, Games, Sports and More
Explore creative ways to make mindfulness fun by integrating it into the activities they are most interested in and enjoy:
Bring mindfulness to games for kids who struggle with attention
Create your own visualizations with kids
Make the virtual virtuous with mindful uses of technology
The more the merrier (or mindful-er?): Small group and partner practices
